I'm Crystal and this is Andy. Together, we are The Better Berry Pie Co! Along with a whole bunch of friends and family members you don't see here who are generously helping us along the way and who we couldn't do this without.
We are trying to build a company everyone can fall in love with - from our pies to our people, we want to be what you deserve in every sense of the word.
Local, organic, gluten free, inclusive and accessible. Climate focused and sustainably minded, we take our role on this earth seriously and hope you do too. Amplifying and lifting up others who are doing critical work within food, social and racial justice, and the environment are important to us.
We are a B Corp and we plan to hold ourselves accountable.
Thanks for joining us on this journey. We can't wait to make you great pie and do our part to help change the world one bite at a time.
Our number one priority is gluten free. Beyond that, we source high quality ingredients that are certified organic and as local as possible. When we cannot get ingredients locally, we shop as small and as close to home as possible from suppliers whose values most closely align with ours.
We are in the Midwest where winter is harsh and a few things are tough to come by (limes, lemons, bananas . . . you know). We purchase fruit from local farmers during peak season, turn it into delicious filling, and freeze it for that fresh-from-the-farm taste we all crave in December.
Here are some of the folks whose amazing ingredients go into our pies:
Aaron & his family have a beautiful organic farm in Northfield, MN. We've been there and highly recommend you stop by sometime. You can find their blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and pumpkins in our pies.
Down in Winona, MN, there's a sweet farm going beyond certified organic and focusing on regenerative farming. Joyce and her family have been farming the land since the 70s. You can find Blue Fruit Farms blueberries in our pies.
Andy and I ventured across the border into River Falls, WI for our very first berry picking outing for Better Berry Pie Co. We hand-picked beautiful strawberries. Stop by and check out their farm when you get the chance!
We haven't made the trek to Larry's farm yet, but we can't wait to do so! A 3rd & 4th generation farm, Larry's family has never farmed conventionally and has been certified organic since 1998. Today demand has grown and Larry's friends & neighbors are helping to grown the needed feed for his flock. Truly local, supporting local.
The Kubiak's are right here in MN and buy vanilla beans for their small-batch vanilla extract directly from local grower cooperatives and women-owned businesses in Madagascar. The flavor is amazing and a staple in our recipes.
For the items we don't source directly: vanilla extract, cream (Kalona SuperNatural), cream cheese (Organic Valley), etc., we work with local distributor CPW. They source mostly certified organic products and support small local businesses. They also offer local produce and cross docking for farmers, too. A strong supporter of a healthy food system.
While our sugars come from Texas, Minneapolis' Dave Chall and his distribution company, Up Coffee Roasters deliver it to us. We use premium Wholesome Sugars that are both organic and gluten free. Dave's team makes sure we never run out!
Local roasters Kelly & Nick create the smoothest roasted coffee. Their Italian blend makes up the coffee in our Better Chocolate Coffee pie. Check them out at Kowalski's!
We need other things like olive oil and spices you can't buy locally so we purchase Terra Delyssa, Anthony's Goods, Azure Standard and more from a variety of sources. We strive for the best, gluten free, organic and local when possible and also try to ensure the sourcing is fair trade, direct or as close as we can get as it aligns with our values. It's not always possible, but always a priority and what we strive to improve upon.
